The Bookworm's Guide to Dating

Rate this book
What I wanted for my birthday: Books.
What I got for my birthday: my brother’s best friend playing matchmaker.

Let it be known that I, Kinsley Lane, am one hundred percent against being set up with somebody.
And I’m one thousand percent sure that Josh Carter is not the man to find me a boyfriend.
I mean, if I’m so great, why isn’t he the one dating me? (For the record, I don’t know the answer. That’s just what the guy on the internet asked.)
Still, I’ll humor him. If I go on his little dates, he’ll teach my bookish, introverted self how not to be totally, completely, utterly, unforgivably awkward on every single one of them.
And all I have to do is fall in love with one of the lovely gentlemen he’s serving up for me on a silver platter—all of whom fit my very specific guidelines.
Simple, right?
It would be.
If only I could stop falling for Josh.

Bookworm jokes? Oh yes I did just snort a laugh.

The bookworm’s guide to dating is a fun friends to lovers romance. Kinsley is hopeless at dating. She’s looking for something close to a book boyfriend. When Josh, her brothers best friend offers to help she gets a taste of the worst possible dates, but also a new relationship with him. He gets her jokes, doesn’t frown on her book love and understands the men she’s looking at are totally wrong. When one outfit choice changes their conversation their chemistry takes a weird change.

Can Kinsley keep her book boyfriends and maybe feel things out with Josh?

So so so funny. I want to be a member of this group of friends. Josh and Kinsley have great chemistry. The book jokes has me laughing out loud.

*I received an ARC but I can’t wait for the book box set which will be out early next year. My review is honest and my own.

Oh how I want to rant about this book! Sounded like a cute premise and light read for the holidays. But believe me there is nothing cute here unless you like to read about people in their late to early 30s behaving like 15 year olds. OR unless you like reading in gross details about the main character's menstruation. OR you crack up at reading about senior citizens behaving loveably, goofy/grumpy and spending all their time entertaining pet ducks, WTF (or were they all senile???) - no I found it to be pretty ageist. OR you can love a heroine who asks her brother to hit her instead of the hero....I. Cannot. Cannot. Go On. Not worth more of my ranting.

Genre: Contemporary romance
Tropes: Brother’s Best Friend, Friends to Lovers, Falling for the Matchmaker, Forbidden

Summary: This book follows Kinsley, who is very shy and introverted. She owns a bookstore with her two best friends. The book starts with her turning a year older and feeling disappointed with her love life. She’s in a dating app but had bad luck in the romance department. Josh, her brother’s best friend, decided to help her find the right guy through the dating app, as well as coach her out of her awkwardness. Josh has always had a crush on Kinsley but because of a pact made with her brother has always considered Kinsley to be off imits. However, the more Josh and Kinsley spend time together, they more they realize true love might be closer than they think.

Likes:
👍 Books about books are always a bonus for me.
👍 The way Kinsley is passionate about books she read, how she gets mad at the characters when they do something she doesn’t like, and how she fangirls over authors is so relatable.
👍 The young people in this book all seem to have a grandparent in the local nursing home so we get a glimpse of them spending some time there. The shenanigans in the nursing home with all the senior residents were so funny.
👍 Steam was just okay, but I don’t feel like it brought the story down.

Dislikes:
👎 Kinsley and Josh were such a frustrating couple. I feel like there’s a lot of unnecessary angst in their story. Also, the forbidden aspect was not even that big of a deal.

Final Verdict:
This novel was just okay for me, which is a little bit of a disappointment since there are books involved and I wanted to really like it. I’m not sure if I’m going to continue with the series because the supporting characters which the subsequent books will be about did not wow me.

THE BOOKWORM’S GUIDE TO DATING (The Bookworm’s Guide Book #1) by Emma Hart is the first book in a new contemporary rom/com series. The main heroines are three friends who own a bookstore in a small town in Montana and their long-time friends. The secondary humor comes from the retirement home where all their grandparents live.

Kinsley Lane is a bookworm and proud of it. She loves analyzing relationships in romance novels and is afraid she will never find a real-life man who will understand and love her for her awkward introverted self. For her birthday, she decides to start dating. She lets her friends convince her to sign up for dating apps on-line and has her brother’s best-friend volunteer to play matchmaker. She is not sure why he is helping, but if he can find one who meets her very specific guidelines and helps her with her awkwardness, she is in.

Josh Carter offers to help Kinsley find a boyfriend. He helps set Kinsley up and even takes her on a practice date, but there is something important he is not telling her. He is hoping by finding Kinsley a boyfriend, he will quit obsessing over her. He made a pact with her brother years ago that neither of them would date the other’s sisters, but Josh finds the bookish Kinsley is the one he wants.

This is a quick read full of laughter, love and quirky realistic characters. Kinsley and Josh’s banter and texting felt pitch perfect and their relationship developed at a realistic pace. The sex scenes were explicit, but not gratuitous. I loved the scenes in the bookshop between the three friends and all the bookish references. The secondary characters are all part of the three girls lives and add to the small town feel of everyone knowing everyone else. The secondary comedy plotline of the retirement home where all the grandparents live and have their own dramas had me laughing out loud.

I can highly recommend this first in the series rom/com and I am looking forward to the next!

I had a terrible habit of comparing every real man I met to the fictional ones in books to the point that I actually stopped trying to meet real men.

This book is adorable and a very quick and easy read. Although Kinsley is totally relatable at times, I can say that her ONLY personality is reading books. And yes, I say that while I spend 70% of my free time reading a book or on goodreads. But I can still strike up a conversation on anything from climate change to the stock market.
Josh & Kinsley have great chemistry and I loved the other characters as well, I can’t wait to read the second instalment of this series!

İlk sahne, Kinsley'in okuduğu romanın içeriğine sinirlenip, bir hışımla kitabı fırlatmasıyla başlar.

Kinsley'in randevulaşma uygulamalarına kaydolduğunu öğrenince duruma el atar. Madem benimle olmuyor, ona harika randevular ayarlayayım. O mutlu olursa bende onu unutup yoluma devam ederim.

Hemen hemen her karakterin huzurevinde yaşayan büyükanne-babası olduğuna değinmiyorum bile. Hepsi çok çılgındı. Ördekleri süsleyip meydanda yürüyüşe çıkartmak. Okey😁

Kısacık bir hikaye ama söylemek istediğim çok şey vardı ama tadında kalsın. Keyifli vakit geçirmelik, hoş bir kitaptı. Ve en önemli konu;

RULE TWO: BOOK BOYFRIENDS ARE NOT REAL.
SADLY.

Kinsley is awkward. Although she would like to find her happily ever after she is much more comfortable immersing herself in the romances of the characters in her books than putting herself out there in the real world. Seeing her struggles on her birthday Josh her brothers best friend offers to help her be more relaxed with finding a guy to date.

Josh has secretly harboured romantic feelings for Kinsley for years but has never acted on them. Hopefully, helping her find her man will help him to move on. However, things don't quite go to plan.

Thoroughly enjoyed this take on brothers best friend bookworm romance. The perfect balance of quirky, fun and romance. I'm looking forward to the other books in this series.

The Bookworm’s Guide to Dating follows the story of Kinsley and Josh. Kinsely is the ultimate bookworm. She’s addicted to the written word and wants nothing more for her birthday than books. However, Kinsley got more than she bargained for. The last thing she wanted was for her brother’s best friend to try and set her up. In spite of everything, Kinsley finds herself going along with Josh’s plan. Seems simple enough. Too bad Kinsley ended up falling for Josh instead….

Overall, I thought that this was a really cute book. Kinsley could be my soul sister. She’s an introvert who is completely addicted to books. However, when it comes to real-life romance, she’s a complete wreck. So, when Josh offers to help Kinsely find Mr. Right, she can’t help but jump at the offer. Unbeknownst to Kinsley, Josh has had a crush on her for the longest time and never acted on it because Kinsley’s brother is his best friend. The last thing he really wants to do is set Kinsley up with another man, but maybe, just maybe this might be what Josh needs to finally get over the woman he can’t have.

The Bookworm’s Guide to Dating is a fun and entertaining read. The characters are real and easy to connect with. Josh and Kinsley’s romance is the ultimate slow burn that will leave you begging for more. Their story has the perfect balance of romance, drama, humor, and sexy good times.

When it comes to romantic comedies, Emma Hart never disappoints. This story is filled with her signature heart and humor. Josh and Kinsley’s story stole my heart and I had the best time getting lost in their story.

Emma Hart is back with The Bookworm’s Guide to Dating. It’s a spinoff from The Girl Next Door. Those characters appear in this one but it’s not necessary to read that one beforehand. This new series centers around 3 girls who own a bookshop in a small town in Montana. This one is a great intro to the characters. As you can easily presume, this book centers around a bookworm, so there was no shortage of good bookworm/introvert jokes!

Kinsley’s birthday is soon and she realizes she really should start working on her dating life. When she brings this up with her friends, her brother’s best friend, Josh, offers to help match make for her. He will go through her online dating profile and sift through the men to get the right dates for her. But, he is not doing this out of pure kindness. He has a crush on her and is hoping to extinguish this with setting her up with a good guy. Kinsley is pretty naïve and clueless throughout the book. Josh was such a sweet guy from the beginning. It was so easy to love both of them. Add to that some wonderful supporting friends and an odd retirement community with a duck parade, this was a pretty fantastic brother’s best friend story that I read in one sitting. I enjoyed this so much, and cannot wait for the rest of the books in this series.

*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I admittedly have been on a self imposed Emma Hart hiatus after inhaling some of her releases in rapid succession and unfortunately some of my more recent reads from her weren’t my favorite. This book is the perfect re-entry to the Emma Hart I adored in the beginning!

Kinsley describes herself as an awkward bookworm with a string of bad dating luck but I definitely had my own share of bad dates especially from online dating as well. She is relatable and passionate about her interests but also snarky and relentless when you get to know her. Often times I feel heroines get trapped as this cookie cutter “Awkward” girl who just needs the hero to inspire her to come out of her shell. I appreciate how Josh and this book really focuses on the message that there is nothing wrong with Kinsley and the person she dates should be able to accept her for exactly who she is. And Josh does just that.

Oh Josh 😍! Fiercely loyal to his promise to his best friend to not date his sister when they were young, he has suppressed his feelings for Kinsley for so long. He really just had the best intentions and I am so glad Kinsley pushed him for the truth. Their relationship is refreshingly mature and just well thought out over the consequences. Josh was definitely my favorite.

Overall, this was a fun light rom com read that was perfect to reintroduce me back to Emma Hart’s work. I am excited to go back now and read about Ivy and Kai who was a side character in this book that I realized had their own book already! Also the teaser for the next book with Holley and Sebastian looks like it will be a fun read!

ARC kindly received in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this one. I really liked Kinsley - I thought she was an easily relatable character - I mean, she loves books, has been single for ages because she has her own standards, and is her own self. I loved that. Plus she owned a bookstore which is awesome.

Josh was a really great character too. I liked how sweet he was, but how easy things were between he and Kinsley, and his loyalty to his best friends. Cause yeah, best friends brother romances get me all the time, I love them!

This had all the usual Emma Hart fun bits - funny characters, including crazy oldies, great best friends and swoon hero's. I really look forward to more of these guys - there are at least two couples I think we're going to get after this - hopefully my hunches are right!

The Bookworm's Guide to Dating was a fun read. Kinsley is a bookworm and a little awkward. She's a relatable character. She signs up for a dating app and her brother’s best friend, Josh, decides to help her find a boyfriend. Josh is a sweet nice guy. Both Josh and Kinsley have a crush on each other but the other doesn't know. These two are sweet and there are plenty of funny moments. This one is book one in The Bookworm's Guide series. This one was Kinsley and Josh's story and it ended nicely, now I can't wait to continue the series with Holley's story.

This was cute, funny and enjoyable. I did like all the bookworm puns and tidbits.

That being said, I feel like it was overdone at times? Because after reading this story, all I can say about Kinsley's character is that she's snarky and she loves books. These are her two traits and that's it.

Nonetheless, overall, if one likes brother's best friend trope and stories with ensemble of characters, it's a good book to pick up.

***5 ‘Duck’ Stars***

This book was all kinds of fun. I snort laughed, I growled in frustration, I swooned and Iactually gasped in outrage (please note in this particular moment the outrage was not directed at either Kinsley or Josh)..this is something that I’m pretty sure is a first for me, but yeah...this baby had it all and has me making full on grabby hands at the next one in the series in a big way.

I adored Kinsley and Josh. Kinsley is an introvert, kind of awkward and yet totally comfortable in her own skin, sweet, snarky, sassy and was just a lot of fun. Josh is a good man, loyal and protective guy who, for the most part, just rolls with the punches, but will stand his ground when necessary.

Their journey to their HEA was all kinds of fun. The whole best friends baby sister/older brothers bff thing is a pretty significant factor, but really, this is a friends to lovers story through and through and I loved watching as they became more than just friends. Their banter/texts were awesome and I really liked how they saw each other’s quirks as things that made them strong and unique. There isn’t a whole bunch of angst in this, there are some craycray moments, but overall, this was a fun, smexy read and I loved how things worked out for them in the end.

And while I loved and adored Kinsley and Josh, their friends and family were all kinds of fun! Catching up with Ivy and Kai was awesome and getting to know the rest of the crew ~ Holley, Colton, Tori and Saylor ~ better has me wanting to see them all get their own HEA’s. But, it’s the grandparents ~ and their “friends” ~ that took the cake. I absolutely loved them and cannot wait to see what happens with them all next!

As usual I LOVED the latest book by this author! However as I read I kept feeling like someone had been pretty much following me and reading my every thought about dating and books, etc. I usually find connections with characters in my favorite romance books, but oh my gosh, Kinsley reminded me so much of myself that it was a bit crazy! Even though I’m 47 and she is only 26, her reasons for single pretty much sound just like mine. The reasons she would not be interested in a guy, even if he was cute, yeah, pretty similar to reasons I might swipe left on Tinder myself! And then there was the whole Harry Potter conversation, I could totally see having that same conversation, and have probably had very similar ones with people in my own life. Not on dates, mind you, because my dating life is pretty much like Kinsley’s was at the beginning of the book, nonexistent.

But then there was Josh. I adored him and how much he still crushed on Kinsley, and how her arguing and silliness was part of what he liked about her. And he was the perfect match. Even if we had that one thing that I always don’t quite get, the older brother or brother at all, not wanting their friends to date their sister. I mean if you know your friend is a good guy, why wouldn’t you? But being a female, it may just be that I don’t understand the reasoning.

Of course there were so many other funny aspects to this book. We got to meet up with the characters from The Girl Next Door, and we met who I’m assuming will be the other characters, some of them anyway, in the rest of this new series, The Bookworm’s Guide. Also, as per every book by this author that I’ve read for the most part, we have our geriatric crew of mischief makers who are the grandparents and their friends, the ones who help our main characters get into trouble, or figure things out, but always in a humorous fun way. This time, it’s a duck parade. Yep, you read that right!

I also had a couple lines that I loved so much I have to share.

“Sometimes romance was cold wine and sanitary pads.” – Now, not tampons? But still, hilarious and the way Kinsley dealt with her pain for that time of the month was very reminiscent of how I felt!

I’m also going to steal this one for the appropriate situations: “Settle your tea kettle”. I mean how perfect is that? And I love a good rhyme!

If you haven’t read an Emma Hart book yet, you really need to get on that, her books are always full of plenty of laughs and the perfect amount of steamy scenes for the romance as well.

TBH it was the blurb for the third book in the series that caught my interest. But since it hasn't been released yrt, I thought I'd try the first two. I wasn't that excited about book 1 but you never know, right?

Well, the friend-helping-a-friend-find-love-but-secretly-in-love trope isn't my cup of tea. But that wasn't what put me off this book. It was the heroine and her friends. They were over-the-top, trying-too-hard to be witty, clever, and cute. At least, that was my impression.

But what really made me dislike the book was Kinsley herself. She wasn't that great of a catch. She said she was awkward and just not used to dating. But she sounded like she was just obnoxious and a snob.

Here's an example:

Josh was messaging her potential dates (why?!) and talking her up. They ask Kinsley directly why he isn't dating her if she's so great. So she confronts Josh via text about it. He tells her what he did and she replies:

KINSLEY: I’m not sure what else you could have said. I gave a stunning account of myself in that bio, Josh.

And later on in the same conversation, she's incredibly rude and mean

Talking about a heroine in a book she just read:
Josh: So she’s in a book.

KINSLEY: Well she’s not trapped in an oyster, Joshua

After she's mean to him:
ME: That sounded like a big old insult, Kinsley.

KINSLEY: Oh, good. You do still have some brain cells.

And when he ser her up with someone who skis:
KINSLEY: Do you know what I do with skis?

KINSLEY: I beat the people who displease me with them.

ME: Sounds painful.

KINSLEY: Why don’t you come over and you can find out?

And talking about her ideal guy:
JOSH: Yeah, but you’re looking for a fucking unicorn here, Kins.

ME: I have standards.

JOSH: You want a male you.

ME: I’d date the shit out of myself.

JOSH: Really? I wouldn’t date me.

ME: Good thing I don’t want to date you then, huh?

I mean, I could go on and on how she's not witty and clever, just plain old mean. And he never even insults her. He's so nice to her. I don't understand why he loves her. Why anyone likes her, really. She's never nice. Only self-absorbed.

Sigh. Anyway, DNF'd at aeound 30% and read the last few chapters. Didn't excite me one bit. Maybe it does get better later on. But I wasn't about to invest time on a girl who should learn how to be nice to others.

It was a good and fun read, although it did over do it a bit with the bookworm thing. Like it felt like she mentioned things about books alllll the time and it got annoying after a while . And it felt like her whole personality was about books and nothing else. But I did like the relationship between the two main characters.

This was such a cute and fun read. I will say it took me until 20% to really get into this book and characters but once I did, I loved Kinsley and Josh. Kinsley is the stereotypical bookworm and even owns a bookstore with her best friends. Josh has had a secret crush on Kinsley forever. Their story is adorable and even has ducks dressing up!

What I thought was fun about this book is we met all these characters in Tori and Kia’s book, the Girl Next Door! It’s really great getting stories from each of these characters. If you love a cute RomCom with a bookworm, you’ll love this book.

The Bookworm’s Guide to Dating is the first book in an all new series from Emma Hart that revolves around three friends who run a bookstore together.

Kinsley has a birthday coming up and naturally any bookworm would want books. She also realizes that she should maybe start working on her dating game. She brings up her idea of online dating while out to dinner with her friends and brother. Her brother’s best friend, Josh, volunteers to help her out when it comes to her online dating game…..of course, things don’t work out how either of them planned.

Josh is super swoony! He is sweet, caring, a great friend and supportive. He has also been crushing on Kinsley for a long time, but never did another about his since he is best friends with her older brother. Kinsley is hilarious and kind of clueless when it comes to dating. I loved her and all her quirkiness. Josh and Kinsley had amazing chemistry and there was so many hilarious scenes between them, thanks to their amazing banter.

The Bookworm’s Guide to Dating is fully of banter, chemistry, an amazing group of friends, the best retirement crew EVER and some ducks. If you’re looking for a brother’s best friend romance that will have you laughing and swooning this one is a MUST READ!!!

Fun and bookish and surprisingly hot, too.

I always like a story set in a bookshop, and this one didn’t disappoint. Girlfriends running a bookstore, lots of talks about books and their passion for them, and a handsome gentleman who pines in secret for the awkward and snarky owner.

It is easy fun, with plenty of humorous dialogues filled with banter and attitude. I enjoyed the romance that goes from secret crush to forbidden relationship to happy ending. It is well developed, prompts many smiles and some laughs especially around the ducks debacle but also with the characters' crazy remarks, and has a couple of hot scenes that sizzle. I really liked how the girls deal with the bookshop. It made me want to be part of the team!

The romance is cute and funny. The part related to the brother was over the top, but added some meat to the couple's fear of being found out. Nice start of a new interrelated series. Give me more bookish females!

This is the first book in the new Bookworm's Guide series and one that I had a hard time putting down! In true Emma fashion she delivered a book that was hilarious with witty banter, tons of shenanigans (especially from the grandparents) and so much heat from the chemistry that I didn't realize I finished until I couldn't swipe more pages. If you enjoy a friends to lovers rom com that will have you smiling, laughing and swooning then pickup this book and enjoy the ride!

Okay this was cute, the pinning and longing. Secret dating is not my favorite trope but I could deal with it.

Moc milá oddechovka, plná humoru a svéhlavých postav.

3.5 stars

Major spoiler ahead so be careful!

“Sometimes, romance was cold wine and sanitary pads.”

Let me start by saying... they haven’t told each other the magic words I love you... I was waiting the whole book for them to say these words out loud and I didn’t even get that. Which is why I have taken the half a star away from the railing. Otherwise it would be plain and simple 4 stars.

Unfortunately, I have found a lot of misspells and grammar mistakes but won’t go into it further. These stars are just based on the plot.

I adored the heroine, her love for books and hate for love triangles. Or more likely their outcomes 😂

Hero could have had more balls though.

Not a bad read, just a plain and simple one. No major drama.
